The current Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe doesn’t have a dedicated Mercedes-AMG offering with one of the tuner’s hand-built engines, and neither will the redesigned model.

That’s according to Autocar which is reporting that the performance range-topper for the redesigned E-Class Coupe will be a new model dubbed the E50 Coupe.

The “50” in the name is said to signify two things. Firstly, it indicates that the car is positioned higher than the current E43 sedan. And secondly, it helps celebrate next year’s 50th anniversary of the founding of AMG.

Mercedes is yet to announce when the redesigned E-Class Coupe will debut but sometime early next year is likely. The E50 model should arrive alongside the regular E-Class Coupe or shortly after it.

Prototypes for the redesigned E-Class Coupe and E-Class Cabriolet have been spied for over a year. The E50, which should be offered as both a coupe and convertible, should feature unique styling elements as well as performance-tuned suspension. It should also have a unique power rating.

According to Autocar, the engine will be a new 3.0-liter inline-6 equipped with an electric compressor and delivering 402 horsepower. Mercedes has already previewed the engine.
