Developed in World War I, the Razzle Dazzle paint/wrap was intended to make it harder to optically range vessels at sea. It consists of complex patterns of geometric shapes in contrasting colors, interrupting and intersecting each other.

Unlike other forms of camouflage, the intention of dazzle is not to conceal but to make it difficult to estimate a target’s range, speed, and heading. Norman Wilkinson explained in 1919 that he had intended dazzle more to mislead the enemy about a ship’s course and so to take up a poor firing position, than actually to cause the enemy to miss his shot when firing.

Many decades later and a similar paint job finds its way onto BMW’s most advanced car-to-date – the i8 plug-in hybrid.

According to a Reddit post by the owner, the i8 was picked up in September and featured the Crystal White color. Shortly after, a full Satin Black Wrap 1 was added only to be followed by a custom camo patterns overlay. The cost for a similar design is said to be between $3,000 and $5,000.

The final package is now a combination between a military car and a Batmobile, but nonetheless an interesting one that will make the i8 stand out even more.
